It’s hard to make changes, but no matter how good you live, you will have to move to a new home sooner or later.

Hopefully, it will be sooner, as this means you are well-off and can afford to live rent-free in your own place. Moving is extremely stressful, even if you are moving into Buckingham Palace. OK, maybe not Buckingham Palace, but we can’t all be Kamila, right?

The thought of packing up your life and starting anew can be overwhelming, leading to sleepless nights and frayed nerves. But fear not! You can easily navigate this transition by adhering to some practical tips and having a positive mindset.

So, are you ready to find the secret of shedding stress and anxiety during a move? Read on.

    Plan Ahead and Stay Organised

Moving can be overwhelming, with numerous tasks to tackle, decisions to make, and deadlines to meet. However, with a well-thought-out plan and a structured approach, you can significantly reduce the burden on yourself and make the entire process smoother.

The first step in this process is creating a moving checklist. Begin by jotting down all the tasks that need to be accomplished before moving day.

These tasks can include sorting and decluttering your belongings, notifying utility companies of your move, transferring or cancelling subscriptions, changing your address with the post office, and researching new schools or healthcare providers if necessary.

Hell, you can even include creating a checklist in the checklist. See, you already have one task completed. You’re halfway there.

A comprehensive checklist will help you track what needs to be done and give you a sense of progress as you check off the completed tasks.

Once you have your moving checklist, it’s crucial to break it down into smaller, manageable tasks. Instead of looking at the whole picture, focus on one step at a time.

For example, designate specific days or weekends for packing up each room in your house. By dividing the work, you won’t feel overwhelmed, and you’ll have a clear sense of what you need to do daily or weekly.

To maintain a structured approach, set a timeline for completing each task. Be realistic about the time required for various activities and ensure you give yourself enough buffer time to handle unexpected delays or challenges.

Avoid leaving everything to the last minute, as that can lead to stress and rush, making it more likely to forget or overlook essential details.

In addition to planning the logistics of the move, consider creating a moving binder or folder to keep all the important documents, contracts, and receipts organised. This includes moving quotes, rental agreements, insurance papers, and other relevant paperwork.

Having everything in one place will make it easy to access information when needed and reduce the likelihood of misplacing essential documents.

If you’re moving with a family, involve everyone in the planning process. Hold regular family meetings to discuss the moving checklist, delegate tasks, and address any concerns or questions.

Involving everyone will lighten your load and foster a sense of teamwork and shared responsibility among family members.

    Seek Support and Delegate Tasks

Moving doesn’t have to be a solo endeavour.

Seek support from friends and family to lighten the load both physically and emotionally. You’ll be surprised how eager loved ones are to lend a helping hand during this significant life transition.

From packing assistance to emotional encouragement, having a support system can make a world of difference.

Furthermore, consider delegating some tasks to professionals. Use the services of a reputable moving company to handle your belongings’ heavy lifting and transportation. Research and choose the right vendors early on, such as cleaners, painters, or handymen.

Having reliable specialists taking care of certain aspects of the move will free up your time and energy for other essential tasks.

    Take Breaks and Self-Care

During the moving process, listening to your body and mind is essential.

Moving can be physically and mentally demanding, so it’s crucial to take breaks when needed. Schedule regular breaks throughout the day to relax and recharge. Go for a walk, practise deep breathing exercises, or simply sit down with a cup of tea to unwind.

Additionally, prioritise self-care during this time. Ensure you get enough sleep, eat well-balanced meals, and stay hydrated.

Consider indulging in activities that bring you joy and help you relax, whether it’s reading a book, meditating, or practising yoga. Taking care of yourself will keep stress and anxiety at bay, allowing you to tackle the move with a clear and positive mindset.

    Maintain Healthy Habits

It’s easy to let healthy habits slip through the cracks when life gets busy and chaotic. However, maintaining a routine can provide a sense of stability during the moving process.

Continue to exercise regularly, even if it’s just a short walk or a quick workout. Exercise releases endorphins, which can boost your mood and reduce stress levels.

Stick to a healthy diet as much as possible, avoiding excessive junk food and caffeine. Nutritious meals will provide energy for your body to keep going during this busy time.

    Create a Relaxing Environment

Creating a relaxing space in the chaos of moving homes sounds like a cruel joke, but it will immensely help your mental health. It’s not that hard to designate a peaceful corner while packing and preparing and make it your tranquil oasis in the vast chaos surrounding you.

Choose an area away from the main moving chaos, such as a cosy nook in the living room, a corner of the bedroom, or even a spot on the balcony or the garden. This will be your go-to spot to retreat to when things get overwhelming.

Fill your chosen space with items that promote comfort and relaxation. Add soft cushions, throws, and blankets to create a cosy atmosphere.

Incorporate elements that soothe your senses, such as scented candles, essential oil diffusers, or a small water fountain. Consider playing soft, calming music to set the right ambience.

Whenever possible, choose a spot that receives plenty of natural light during the day. Sunlight can have a positive impact on mood and energy levels.

Open windows to let fresh air circulate, which can invigorate and refresh your mind. Exposure to nature and natural elements has been shown to reduce stress and improve well-being.

Ensure your chosen relaxing corner is free from clutter and unnecessary items. A clutter-free environment can help clear your mind and reduce visual distractions.

Keep only a few items that have a calming effect on you, and consider keeping a small shelf or storage unit nearby to organise any necessary items you may need for your relaxation time.

Establish rules for your designated relaxation space, and let your family members or roommates know that this area is off-limits for packing or moving-related activities. This will help maintain the peaceful ambience of the space and give you a sanctuary to escape to whenever needed.

Use your relaxing environment as a place for mindfulness and meditation.

    Stay Positive and Practice Mindfulness

Outside this oasis, don’t forget to stay positive. A positive mindset can work wonders during a move.

Embrace the adventure and look forward to the new opportunities that await you in your new home. Practice mindfulness by staying present at the moment and acknowledging any negative thoughts or emotions without judgment.

Focus on the positive aspects of the move and visualise a successful and happy transition.

    Stay Connected with Loved Ones

Amidst the hustle and bustle of moving, don’t forget to stay connected with your loved ones. Moving can sometimes make you feel isolated, so try contacting friends and family regularly.

Share your excitement and concerns with them, for talking about your feelings can be therapeutic.

Try to organise small get-togethers or virtual gatherings with friends before you leave. These moments of connection will provide emotional support and create lasting memories before embarking on your new journey.

    Keep a Moving Journal

Documenting your moving experience in a journal can be a therapeutic way to process your thoughts and emotions.

Write about your excitement, fears, and any challenges you encounter during the move. Use the journal as a tool for reflection and growth, noting how you handle stress and anxiety and how you overcome obstacles.

Looking back on your moving journal once you’re settled in your new home can serve as a reminder of your resilience and adaptability.

    Prepare for the Transition

As moving day approaches, take some time to prepare for the transition mentally. Familiarise yourself with your new neighbourhood by exploring nearby parks, cafes, or shops. This will help you feel more at ease when you arrive in your new surroundings.

Additionally, make a list of things you look forward to doing or experiencing in your new home. Having positive expectations will make the move feel like a thrilling adventure.

    It ain’t easy

We know that all these things require extra effort, but mental health always does. These extra steps will give you the strength to go through the emotional rollercoaster of moving to a new home.
